Tectite or press? When to use push-fit and when press fittings

Both methods join pipes without a flame, but they suit different situations. We compare Tectite and Besco press using data from the manufacturers' catalogues.

Pressure and temperature

Besco press for water operates at up to 16 bar in the range −10…110 °C. With Tectite, the permissible pressure depends on the line, the pipe and the temperature:

Tectite with pipeup to 30 °C65 °Cmax. temperature
Sprint, Pro (up to 28 mm), 316 (up to 28 mm) · copper or stainless steel20 bar16 bar10 bar at 114 °C
Pro and 316 (from 35 mm)16 bar10 bar6 bar at 90 °C
Classic · copper16 bar10 bar6 bar at 95 °C
Sprint, Classic · PEX or PB12 bar (up to 20 °C)6 bar3 bar at 92 °C

The minimum temperature in the Tectite table is −24 °C with copper and −20 °C with PEX. The manufacturer recommends pressure testing every system after installation, at up to 1.5 times the working pressure.

When to use Tectite

  • Servicing and refurbishment: no press tool, electricity or torch needed. Just cut the pipe square, deburr, mark the insertion depth and push in. Details in the Tectite installation instructions (PDF).
  • Places where a flame must not be used or a press tool will not fit.
  • Plastic pipes: PEX and PB with a liner, as well as copper-to-plastic transitions within one system.
  • Where dismantling matters: Classic, Pro and 316 can be disconnected, e.g. for temporary connections.

When to use press

  • New investments and large diameters: Besco press in the M profile goes up to 108 mm, Tectite up to 54 mm.
  • Gas: for gas installations we have press lines with DVGW and INiG approvals.
  • Companies with a press tool: for them, press means fast, repeatable installation. The profile is chosen to match the jaws, see V profile or M profile?

What this means for wholesalers

Tectite and press do not compete; they serve different customers: the service engineer and the installer without a press tool, and the contracting company on larger installations. Both systems are in our range, so a wholesaler can order them on one invoice.
