V or M profile? How to match press fittings to the press tool

Press fittings differ in the shape of their ends, which must match the jaws of the press tool. We explain what the V and M profiles are and how to set a wholesaler’s stock levels for them.

What a fitting profile means

In press systems, the fitting is pressed with the jaw of a press tool. The jaw has a specific contour, and the fitting must have an end with the same contour for the pressed joint to be tight. The most common contours in copper installations are V and M. The contour marking is on the jaw, so the installer usually knows which profile they work with.

For a wholesaler this means one simple thing: a customer with V jaws will buy V fittings, and a customer with M jaws will buy M fittings. Two profiles mean two separate stock levels of the same fitting.

Copper to EN 1254-7. Diameters above 54 mm (up to 108 mm) are in the M profile, both in copper and in carbon steel.

Can M be pressed with a V jaw?

According to the Besco 2026 catalogue, M profile fittings can also be pressed with a V jaw in the range DN12–28. In these diameters, one stock of M fittings will serve customers with both types of jaw. Above 28 mm, stick to the profile that matches the jaw.

How to set stock levels at a wholesaler

  • Small diameters (12–28 mm): this is where turnover is highest. Ask your regular customers which jaws they use and set the V to M ratio based on their answer.
  • Large diameters (35–108 mm): above 54 mm Besco offers only the M profile, so it covers larger projects and boiler rooms.
  • Gas: gas lines are separate items (GPG and the 7000 series). They are not replaced with fittings from the water lines.
  • Full packs: each item in the catalogue has two bulk packaging options (bag and box), e.g. elbow GP5001 15 mm: 10 and 120 pieces.

How to order

You will find all items in the V profile finder and the M profile finder. Add items to the list, set quantities in boxes or bags and send it for a quote.
